At least 8 gays killed in Gauteng

At least eight gay men have been murdered in their homes in Gauteng since 2010, the OUT-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender group said on Thursday.

All the cases remained unsolved, OUT's director Dawie Nel said in a statement.

The group called on police for urgent action following the most recent murder, that of 67-year-old Joburg Theatre manager Rulov Senekal, in his Braamfontein, Johannesburg flat on Saturday.

“All eight murdered victims were gay. They were murdered in their private homes, little or nothing was stolen, there was no sign of forced entry, and most of them were strangled.”

He said OUT had formed a team to follow up on these cases with the police stations concerned.

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Jenny Pillay said no arrests had been made in connection with Senekal's murder.

She declined to be drawn on the other murder cases.

“I can't comment on the allegations made,” she said. - Sapa
