Beware of criminals impersonating cops

A number of incidents involving criminals posing as police officers in Johannesburg have recently been reported to ADT.

Mr Roy Rawlins, managing director of ADT, central region, said that it is common for criminals to impersonate security or police officers and service providers, such as electricians, telephone repairmen or garden service employees.

“There is no need to be paranoid when approached by a security or police officer but what is important is that you ask for, and are shown, formal identification. Don’t allow anyone onto your property, no matter what they claim their business is and educate your domestic staff about the dangers of opening the gate to someone you are not expecting,” said Mr Rawlins.

Mr Rawlins recommends that residents always ask for identification and verify this further by contacting the police station or business the person claims to work for.

“It is better to be safe than sorry. If you feel something is out of place, report it to the SAPS or ADT immediately,” said Mr Rawlins.
