Business warned against rugby fraudster

At least two Cape Town restaurants have been defrauded by a man claiming to be a representative of the SA Rugby Union, the organisation said on Thursday.

“In one instance, a Cape Town restaurant received a booking for a meal for 27 people on the strength of an apparently forged 'proof of payment',” Saru said in a statement.

In another incident, a booking was made for 36 people.

The man, purporting to be the chair of the organising committee of Saru, used the proof of payment to claim overpayment for another booking.

“The fraudster requests reimbursement into his account in order to ensure his party is able to pay for transport to fulfil the booking.”

Businesses were warned to beware of man calling himself Craig Adams and using the e-mail address in an attempt to add credibility to the scam.

“Saru has no such employee and does not operate such an e-mail domain. Saru is making further inquiries with a view to referring the matter to the SA Police Service,” it said. – Sapa
