The number of attacks on census workers in the Western Cape has risen to three – after several enumerators were robbed and, in a separate incident, a female counter narrowly escaped being raped.

The attacks prompted Premier Helen Zille to tweet: “Several attacks against census enumerators over last 24 hrs. Attempted rape, robbery, shooting, assault. Tragic. Look after the counters.”

National census spokesman Trevor Oosterwyk confirmed the two attacks on enumerators in informal settlements in the Western Cape on Friday night.

An attacker tried to rape a female enumerator. “She was dragged into a house and threatened. She escaped unharmed,” Oosterwyk said.

In the second incident, several census workers were robbed of bags of equipment and questionnaires.

Oosterwyk confirmed the shooting and assault Zille referred to, but did not have further details.

He said several enumerators had been victims of crime in other parts of the country, including an attacker trying to rape an enumerator in East London and, in Limpopo, an assailant trying to rob an enumerator.

More than 150 000 enumerators wearing yellow bibs and carrying 14-page questionnaires started counting the population last Monday and will continue until the end of the month. - Weekend Argus
