Children left in car, woman held

A woman was arrested at a shopping centre in Vereeniging after paramedics had to break the window of her black BMW to rescue two severely dehydrated children, Beeld newspaper reported on Friday.

She was arrested at the River Square shopping centre after allegedly hitting a policeman upon seeing the broken window on Thursday.

Captain Shadow Mashobane said the woman would be charged with child neglect, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

She reportedly arrived at the centre around 2pm with four children, leaving a six-month-old baby and two-year-old in the car. A car guard notified police and paramedics.

Netcare paramedic Mary-Ann Rautenbach, who broke the car window, said: “The children were exhausted from crying. They were soaking wet.”

She broke the window because babies can dehydrate very quickly.

The one child didn't open her eyes as they were taken to hospital where oxygen was administered, reported Beeld. - Sapa
