Close call for cop in high-speed chase

A bullet grazed the head of a police constable and two men were arrested following a high-speed chase near Liefde en Vrede, south of Joburg.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said a police patrol van was stopped by a victim of an alleged business robbery near the corner of Swartkoppies road and Klipriver Drive at about 5pm yesterday.

“The victim told them that he had been robbed and that the robbers had got into a minibus. The police spotted the minibus and gave chase,” he said.

During the chase, the minibus came to a halt and some of the occupants climbed out and opened fire at the police. A 26-year-old constable received a slight head wound. He is in a stable condition, according to Ndou.

“Some of the suspects then climbed back into the minibus and sped off, leaving two of their accomplices,” said Ndou, who added that the duo had fled on foot.

Police called for reinforcements, and a helicopter joined in the search for the two men. They were arrested with an unlicensed 9mm pistol in their possession.

Before the high-speed chase, the men had allegedly robbed a business in Liefde en Vrede, where they stole jewellery, money and cellphones.
