Sowetan columnist Eric Miyeni has launched a scathing attack on City Press editor Ferial Haffajee.

His column titled “Haffajee does it for white masters” has caused outrage on Twitter with many top South African journalists expressing disbelief at his comments.

Last month ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema lost a bid to gag City Press from publishing details of deals he made with business people.

City Press, which overturned a court interdict by Malema aimed at squashing reports into a family trust that he benefits from, had gained access to the bank records of the Ratanang Family Trust into which Malema allegedly paid “millions of rands” in cash received in exchange for favours for businessmen.

In his column Miyeni said Malema “must never answer a Ferial Haffajee”.

“Who the devil is she anyway if not a black snake in the grass, deployed by white capital to sow discord among blacks?” he added.

“In the 80s she'd probably have had a burning tyre around her neck.”

In response, Haffajee said on Twitter: “Khaya, Metro, 702, I'd love a debate with Eric he a twit(terer)?”

The Cit Press editor later tweeted: “Decided: am going to sue, possibly win and put proceeds into bursary for talented young opinionistas. Good end to sorry saga.”

City Press has also been criticised by the ANCYL with the league’s spokesman Floyd Shivambu calling the newspaper’s journalists and editor “puppets” of “masters” bent on protecting ill-gotten wealth. - IOL
