Cop patrols after rock throwing kills driver

The pedestrian bridge in Merebank where a motorist was hit with a brick while driving.

Durban - Police are conducting “regular” patrols near pedestrian bridges that cross major roads to catch those responsible for throwing rocks and bricks at motorists.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed on Monady night that police were being deployed to monitor several areas.

“We are also working with crime intelligence to catch those who are responsible,” said Zwane.

Last Thursday a man was killed when two bricks were flung on to his car from a pedestrian bridge over the N2 close to the old airport.

“We can confirm that Michael Nannucci, 71, was killed after a brick was allegedly thrown off a pedestrian bridge. No arrest has been made at this stage,” he said.

Nannucci was reportedly struck on the head.

Zwane said it was too early in the investigation to speculate who the perpetrators were.

But he warned that those responsible would be caught and face the “long arm of the law”.

Placing cameras in the area was a decision for the municipality to make, he said.
