Couple wounded during robbery

Johannesburg - Two men who wounded a Hibberdene couple were arrested on Wednesday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Colonel Jay Naicker said Martin and Arlene Smith caught the pair breaking into their home on Wednesday afternoon. One of the suspects opened fire on the couple.

“Mrs Smith sustained a gunshot wound to her left leg, while her husband sustained a gunshot wound to his head,” said Naicker.

The men took the couple's bakkie, but abandoned it when it stalled. They were caught while running away.

“It was then established that the suspects had also broken into a fisherman's bakkie (on Wednesday) and stolen his money and clothing,” Naicker said.

The two, both aged 23, faced charges of attempted murder, hijacking, armed robbery and housebreaking, Naicker said. - Sapa
