Daylight robbers hit Shoprite store - SANEWS

Durban - Three men made off with an undisclosed amount of money from Phoenix Plaza on Monday, after robbing a security guard carrying a cash box at gun point.

The G4S guard had collected the box from the Shoprite store in the shopping mall at about 9.30am when he was accosted by the assailants, who also took his gun.

No shots were fired during the robbery and no injuries were reported.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident and said it was being investigated.

“Three unknown suspects armed with handguns held him at gunpoint and robbed him…

“The three ran away and no shots were fired during the robbery. No arrests have been made at this stage,” said Zwane .

Rubecca Khan, a senior portfolio manager at Phoenix Plaza, said the suspects split up once the cash box had been taken, with one escaping in a silver bakkie, while the others vanished into the crowd of shoppers.

However, Zwane said that the “information available to the police at this stage shows that they fled on foot,” and he could not confirm that a vehicle had been used in the robbery.

G4S spokeswoman Wendy Hardy said that although the cash had been taken, the box – known as a cross pavement carrier (CPC) – had a device that emitted an indelible dye which stained the notes when money was stolen from guards while in transit.

“The CPC, used to transport money between the customer and vehicle, activated fully, staining the contents of the carrier,” she said.

This meant that the stolen money would be marked in a blue, purple or red dye. – The Mercury
