MIDRAND - Five men impersonating traffic officers hijacked a Vodacom panel van with a load of 504 Blackberry cellphones last week.

The gang abandoned the panel van on Van Riebeeck Road in President Park, Midrand.

Police spokesman Matome Tlamela said a resident informed the police about a vehicle parked at the roadside. Police found a white Toyota Hilux panel van with a key in the ignition.

The complainant was on his way to deliver 51 boxes containing 504 Blackberry cellphones to Vodacom offices in Midrand.

He said he was attacked by five men who posed as traffic police at the corner of 16th Road and George road, Halfway House. They ordered him to stop the vehicle next to the road.

'He said the gang 'arrested' him and drove with him away from the scene, saying they were taking him to Midrand police station.

He asked to call his boss, but was denied. Tlamela said one of them took out a firearm and threatened to kill him.
