Hijacker sentenced to life


A man convicted of killing a taxi driver during an attempted hijacking in Johannesburg has been sentenced to life imprisonment, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

He received the sentence in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, as well as five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and two years for possession of ammunition, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said.

The sentences would run concurrently.

On February 12, Geza Cele and an accomplice tried to hijack the taxi Sibusiso Masuku, 28, was driving, at the intersection of Plein and Klein streets.

Masuku was shot three times in the upper body and was declared dead on the scene.

Cele was arrested in possession of a firearm and ammunition at the Wanderers taxi rank shortly after the murder. His accomplice remains at large.
