Throwing cash out of the car window at a would-be hijacker saved a Pinetown woman this week.

ANC Women’s League member and well-known Pinetown resident Esther Bawden said she had stopped on the corner of Voortrekker and Creak streets, when a bakkie drove up close to her vehicle.

“Inside were two young guys, one wearing a Dr Seuss yellow and green beanie.

“The next minute the passenger door opened and one of them had put a gun through the window.

“He told me he was going to take my car and demanded the cash stored in my console.

“I threw the cash out of the window towards him and took off,” said Bawden.

Shaking, she swerved around on the street and saw the bakkie had taken off after her. “I had no control over the vehicle and coming up to the stop street, I just skidded around the corner.

“I could see they were still following me, so I cut in front of other motorists, until I reached my local superette. I swung in and parked right next to the door,” she said.

The store manager immediately noticed something was wrong and ran out to help, calling for security.

“ADT security and the police both responded very quickly, but the bakkie had already sped away,” she said.

Bawden was hijacked in May 2007 and her son, Lee, was killed in what was believed to be a botched hijacking in 2000.

“The minute that bakkie pulled up, I knew something was wrong.

“The public should be alert that these two guys are on the prowl,” she advised. - The Independent on Saturday
