Joburg safety plan launched

Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg will deploy 1300 law enforcers in all wards as part of a new approach of visible, ward-based law enforcement, mayor Parks Tau said on Tuesday.

The law enforcers would include metro police, community policing representatives, traffic policemen, and by-law officials.

“The officers will include representatives from various stakeholders who will also be tasked with improving the quality of life,” he said.

Tau was speaking at the launch of a programme to improve law enforcement and the quality of services across the city.

The programme has an underlying theme of Joburg 2040 - the city’s Growth and Development Strategy - which was adopted in 2011.

Tau said the objective was to reduce crime and improve by-law enforcement and traffic management.

“It will at the same time engage in proactive policing through improving community relations,” he said.

“This will be done through (a) focused, information-driven and partnership-based approach.”

Tau said the city was committed to rooting out corruption. - Sapa
