Man held over home-made burglar device

An East Rand man was arrested over the weekend after his home-made anti-burglar contraption injured a visitor to his house, according to a newspaper report. When police arrested the 51-year-old man on Saturday on a charge of attempted murder, they found another five similar devices that had been discarded in a nearby lake, police captain Petros Mabuza told Beeld newspaper. The injured man, Gerrit van Rooyen, went to the house in Brakpan on Friday evening to drop off a set of keys, his wife Yolanda said. “Gerrit and his brother Kobus went to the flat. Lodewyk (the suspect) knows Gerrit, and knew he was coming over,” she said. Lodewyk had erected his anti-theft device at the gate in front of his flat. Van Rooyen stumbled over a tripwire that triggered the device, similar to a pellet gun, and was shot in both his legs. He underwent surgery to remove six bullets from his right leg on Friday night, and was scheduled for a second operation on Monday. The suspect will appear in the Brakpan magistrate's court on Monday. – Sapa
