Man killed in suspected hijacking

A visit to a colleague to witness a traditional Zulu ceremony ended in tragedy for a 61-year-old white man when he was shot with his own gun by would-be car thieves.

Charlie Buitendach was fatally wounded last week at Emadwaleni, Mtubatuba, where he was attending an Umkhehlo (coming of age) ceremony.

A police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said that Buitendach had driven from Nongoma with a group of people to attend the ceremony.

“He left the ceremony to park his car under a nearby tree,” said Zwane.

While parking, Buitendach was approached by two men who allegedly tried to steal his car. An argument ensued.

“They (the suspects) managed to pull out his .38 firearm and shot him twice in the chest,” said Zwane, adding that Buitendach had died at the scene. While trying to drag his body aside, the suspects were spotted and they ran away.

Zwane said the police had since arrested a 30-year-old suspect, who is expected to appear in the Kwamsane Magistrate’s Court this week. “The second suspect is still at large but we are hot on his heels,” he said. - Daily News
