Johannesburg - Former Gauteng local government MEC Humphrey Mmemezi used public funds to build a wall and upgrade security systems at his private residence while in office, the Democratic Alliance said on Tuesday.

“In his 2011/2012 report, Auditor General Terence Nombembe found that Mmemezi spent money from the department to upgrade his security at home.

“The findings were announced by head of department Mongezi Mnyani during a presentation to the local government portfolio committee on Monday,” said DA spokesman on local government, Fred Nel.

Nombembe established that the upgrade to Mmemezi's home did not comply with government's supply chain guidelines.

“MEC Ntombi Mekgwe must inform the public whether the costs will be recovered from those responsible for this fruitless and wasteful expense.”

“Gauteng should not allow itself become a 'Nkandla lite'... MECs should act as the custodians of public money and should not become the plunderers of the fiscus.”

Spokesman for the department Motsamai Motlhaolwa said : “The matter is still under discussion by the department's management. It will be communicated once finalised.”

Mmemezi resigned as MEC in July after apologising for making personal purchases on a government credit card. - Sapa
