MXit date ends in rape

Rape accused Cheslin Fredericks, Klaus Malgas and John Le-Fleur leave Wynberg Court.

Three men have appeared in court for allegedly raping a woman they met on MXit.

John Le-Fleur, 24, Cheslin Fredericks, 23, and Klaus Malgas, 19, appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday where they face six counts of rape.

The charges against them relate to an incident earlier this month where Le-Fleur, from Vredenburg, made contact with a woman on MXit.

According to documents before the court, Le-Fleur and the 20-year-old woman became MXit friends on July 16 and made arrangements to meet the next day.

The court heard that Fredericks, from Malmesbury, and Malgas, from Vredenburg, were with him at the meeting place and after spending a bit of time with the woman they allegedly convinced her to go with them to their room in the hostel at False Bay College in Westlake.

When they got there they had a mini-party before each of them took turns to allegedly rape her. The court heard that the men took pictures of the woman’s genitals as well as video clips of each other having sex with her.

Hours after the alleged incident, the men, who all work for ArcelorMittal in Saldanha, were taken into custody by Kirstenhof Police Station cops.

All three made their first court appearance on July 19 and the matter was postponed to give the State and cops an opportunity to view the video clips and make a decision on whether to release them on bail.

On Friday, Prosecutor Kepler Uys told Magistrate Marietjie van Eeden that the State would not object to the men being released from police custody while cops investigated the alleged rape.

In affidavits handed to the court, each man admitted to knowing the area that the woman lived in but said they didn’t know her address.

All three are enrolled at False Bay College to do the Millwright course that would train them as electricians and fitters.

Van Eeden set the men’s bail at R800 each and set strict bail conditions. They are not allowed to contact the woman at all and they are forbidden from entering the Steenberg area.

She also warned if they don’t return to court for each appearance their bail money would be forfeited and they would be taken back into custody.
