Two men were killed and one was wounded when they were shot by the pedestrian they were trying to rob near a railway station in Crown Mines, Johannesburg, police said on Wednesday.

Warrant Officer Lorraine Van Emmerik said the robbers, one armed with a knife, accosted a man in his 30s while he was walking to the station at 10.30am.

“They tried to attack him and he pulled out his gun, killing two of them and injuring one,” she said.

The N1 highway was closed between the Crown Interchange and the Booysens off-ramp at 2.30pm on Wednesday so a police helicopter could collect the bodies to take them to a mortuary.

“We had to as the area where the incident happened was not accessible by road,” Van Emmerik said.

She said the highway was opened later in the day. A traffic backlog had since cleared. -
