Police launch manhunt after shooting

Johannesburg - Johannesburg police have launched a manhunt for two men who shot and killed a member of the Flying Squad and seriously wounded another near Zonkizizwe on Sunday evening.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the East Rand Flying Squad officers stopped behind a “suspicious” Nissan bakkie with two occupants before 8pm.

“Immediately after the police stopped, the occupants of the vehicle came out and fired several shots at the officers.”

The men then hijacked a Toyota Corolla and stole the occupants’ cellphones before driving away in their car.

“At this stage it is not clear if a shoot-out ensued but the police officers, both Warrant Officers aged 45 and 47, were shot in the upper body. One died at the scene and the other was seriously wounded.”

The men also stole the officers' firearms.

Police later found that the Nissan bakkie ran out of petrol, Dlamini said.

A 9mm pistol was found in the bakkie.

The hijacked Toyota Corolla was found abandoned a few kilometres from the scene and had blood inside.

“One of the suspects might have been wounded while they were shooting at the police officers.”

Police appealed to anyone with information to come forward and warned that the men should be considered armed and dangerous, Dlamini said. - Sap
