Polos high on hijackers lists

A new VW Polo that was hijacked in Rynfield on Monday morning was found abandoned in Cloverdene Road less than an hour later.

According to WO Jannie van Aswegen of the Benoni SAPS, a 30-year-old woman was dropping her child off at a nursery school in Honiball Street when she was attacked.

"When she arrived, she saw a man in his late twenties or early thirties on a cell phone.

"The man pulled out a firearm, taking the vehicle and fleeing," said WO Van Aswegen.

CMS was alerted of the hijacked vehicle before security patroller, Marcus Vermuelen, found it parked outside a wholesale shop.

"Its normal for the hijackers to leave the vehicle abandoned for a couple of hours in case it has a tracking device.

"If it doesn't they come back later and take it," said WO Van Aswegen.

He also added that the new VW Polos had become the most hijacked vehicles in and around Benoni.

"I can not give you exact statistics, but I know that most hijacked vehicles in the area are these cars," he said.
