Two containers of copper cables and aluminium that were seized at Table Harbour on Wednesday were destined for Korea, police said.

After finding the sealed containers at the harbour, police discovered that they belonged to an Epping Scrap Metal firm, said Captain FC Van Wyk.

“Following further investigation, it emerged that the consignment inside the container could belong to Eskom, Telkom, Vodacom, Metrorail, City of Cape Town and service providers using copper cables,” he said.

One of the containers contained 167kg of Telkom overhead open communication wire, which was identified by a Telkom representative. While the containers were being examined and checked at the Epping scrap metal company’s premises, a senior officer spotted a worker pushing a trolley load of 182kg copper cables in the backyard.

The worker was interrogated and “admitted” that an Asian man had sold the copper to the firm for R8 000. – Sapa
