Suspect killed in Joburg robbery

A suspected robber was killed and another arrested during a shoot-out with police in Ruimsig, Roodepoort, Johannesburg police said on Tuesday.

“It is alleged that four suspects stormed into The Campus complex in Van Dalen Street and held victims who were having a party at gunpoint,” Lieutenant Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said.

The men searched the house and stole cellphones, jewellery, cash and laptops before jumping over a boundary wall around 10.30pm on Monday night.

Members of the Roodepoort K9 unit chased them into a nearby veld.

“After realising that they have been cornered, the suspects started shooting at the police, who returned fire.”

The dead man was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm. A second man was shot in the leg and arrested. He was expected to appear before the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court soon facing charges of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The other two were still at large. - Sapa
