Suspected ATM bomber shot dead

Kagiso, West Rand - A suspected ATM bomber was shot dead on Monday at Leratong hospital in Kagiso, on the West Rand, police said.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said Sifiso Kunene tried to escape from the hospital where he was being held under police guard.

Kunene broke into a police officer's car parked outside the hospital and stole a firearm.

He was caught while trying to steal a nurse's car, and was fatally shot in the upper body.

“He had been admitted under police guard after he was shot fleeing from police over a month ago,” Dlamini said.

Kunene had appeared in court for ATM bombings and murder, but the trial was postponed due to the injuries he had suffered while fleeing from the police.

He escaped from a hospital ward around 5am on Monday.

Health spokesman Simon Zwane said services were not disrupted at the hospital. Security had been tightened up.

“Counselling services will be extended to staff members who were traumatised by the incident,” he said.

A hospital driver who was helping police to chase the man suffered minor bruises.

Dlamini said police would investigate how Kunene managed to escape, how he knew where to find the officer's car, and how he knew it contained a gun.

Kunene first escaped through the roof of the Protea police station, in Soweto, while waiting to appear on the same charges in April. - Sapa
