Late-night Pretoria motorists and police involved in a high-speed chase on the N1 had a narrow escape when a suspected hijacker jumped from a moving truck in an attempt to flee.
The truck careered out of control on the south-bound lanes of the highway between the Garstfontein and Rigel off-ramps, and the suspect was shot in the legs as he tried to flee in the early hours of Saturday.
The man allegedly hijacked the truck, which was transporting construction equipment, in Naboomspruit before racing towards Pretoria and Joburg.
The truck owner was called by his driver who explained he had been hijacked.
Tracking the vehicle on his GPS, the owner phoned police as he approached the truck in Pretoria.
Brooklyn police station commissioner, Brigadier Andre Wiese, said officers immediately began a search for the vehicle.
“Following the directions from the owner … police from Brooklyn police station and the Pretoria Flying Squad managed to close in on the vehicle,” Wiese said.
When the suspect spotted the police and realised that they were trying to force him to stop, he jumped from the moving truck, which veered across the highway and narrowly missed the police.
Wiese said that as the suspect tried to flee police shot him in the legs, injuring him slightly.
The truck came to a stop without hitting any vehicles. “It is extremely fortunate that the truck did not collide with any vehicles and seriously injure anyone,” said Wiese. – Pretoria News
