The number of police officers involved in crime is on the rise

CRIME WAVE: More and more police are being charged with criminal activities.

Police are increasingly becoming involved in corruption with a number of officers facing disciplinary action.

In a survey that was presented by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), researcher Gareth Newham told the police committee in Parliament yesterday that more officers found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

He said research by ISS found that there was an increasing number of police officers who were committing various crimes.

Most of them had been prosecuted and charged by police authorities.

The number of bad cops had multiplied in the past four to five years. Newham said there had been a 59% increase in the number of disciplinary cases against police members.

While there were 2064 disciplinary cases in the 2007-08 financial year, this shot up to 5540 during the 2011-12 period, Newham said.

The research also noted that there were a number of cases involving police officers yet some station commanders were not willing to take action against their members.

Newham also told MPs that there had been a massive increase in the cases of corruption involving police officers. He said that corruption involving members increased by a whopping 120% in the past two years.

While there were 476 police officers facing corruption last year, this number increased to 1050 during 2012.

Newham said even the public believed that many police officers were involved in corruption.

Another survey had also found that 66% of the public believed that corruption was widespread in the police.

Newham also said that theyhad found that of those officers involved in corruption only 55% were suspended during the 2010-11 financial year.

But only 8% of those probed for corruption were suspended during the 2011-12 period.
