Warning over money bag scam

Police have warned the public against picking up a money bag dropped on the ground – particularly if you’ve just withdrawn money from an ATM.

Law enforcement agents have warned that they have detected a recent trend used by street cons at the Jabulani and Dobsonville malls in Soweto as well as at the Trade Route Mall in Lenasia, targeting people who have just made cash withdrawals.

On Wednesday, the robbers hit a 66-year-old man after they had watched him withdrawing money from a bank at the Trade Route Mall.

“They seemingly followed him outside and dropped a bag of cash in his way after he left the mall. The victim picked up the bag, and soon the suspects came and accused him of stealing their cash,” said Soweto police spokesman Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

“They then got the victim into their car, telling him that he was being taken to the police station for theft, but instead he was taken to a quiet open space in Lenasia Extension 5, where he was robbed of his cash at gunpoint. They also took his bank card and PIN, and he later discovered that more money had been withdrawn.”

Makhubela said police were investigating at least five similar incidents at the Jabulani and Dobsonville malls over the festive season.

Police are now looking for the man in the picture captured in CCTV camera footage at a bank at the Dobsonville Mall, where a pensioner was also robbed of cash in the same manner.

Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects can phone the Dobsonville police station at 011 983 1500. - The Star
