National police chief General Bheki Cele launched two crime-fighting initiatives in Thokoza, on the East Rand, on Wednesday.
“Everyone must be able to freely walk in the streets at night. Criminals should know that we will pounce on them like a hungry mongoose on a snake,” Cele said in a statement.
The initiatives were dubbed “Tracking Team” and “Duty Calls”.
“Tracking Team” members would try to locate and arrest people wanted for serious crimes.
“Duty Calls” officers would patrol the streets to ensure the safety of local residents during the festive season and beyond.
As part of the operations, dozens of police officers would be deployed across the country, Cele said. He said police had reduced various crimes, including robbery and rapes, in Thokoza and Katlehong in the past months. -
