UNISA EXAM RESULTS FOR LABOUR LAW (MRL 3702) SHOULD BE REVIEWED

We the undersigned do hereby express our concern over the Oct/Nov 2017 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA (UNISA) exam marks for Labour Law (MRL 3702) which were released on the 14th of December 2017 around 9pm. Our concern can be summarised as follows:

1.     A good number of students have pointed out that the exam was reasonable and that every reasonable student should have not failed.

2.     Many bright students have reported their first failure in this exam despite it being an exam any reasonable student should pass.

3.     Some students disillusioned by these unreasonable grades have started complaining on social media (see attached).

4.     For some students, the system reported that they had failed and after a few hours the same system was now reporting that they had been awarded a supplementary exam.

It is our sincere belief that this has been happening over the years.

It is also well known that not everyone might have genuinely passed however the rate at which most students complained about the exam marks calls for the need to inquire into the grading system as well as the marking criteria that was used.

We remain confident that our concern will be taken seriously by the College Officials. A review of the exam scripts should surely show whether these marks are correct or not.

Let’s save the integrity of our Law Degree. Let’s celebrate hard working students.

I passed Labour Law, but I was shocked that I only just scraped by with 53% for the exam. After the paper I was confident that I achieved a distinction. For context and to back up claims that potentially external markers are to blame, this was my final semester, and thankfully I passed the LLB cum laude, but there is definitely some irregularity with these results.

I know of over 20 students who all got 31% including myself and it was one of the best exams I have written. Could not believe the failing Mark.

I studied hard. I expected to get between 50-60. I only required 40 because my semester mark was 90. I received 39. This was the final module I had to pass in order to get my degree. How is this even possible??

MRL3702 is the lowest mark I've ever received. I'm talking from Primary School level until now. I've never studied so hard yet failed so dismally at the same time.

I received a bizarre mark for my Labour Law exam which makes no sense at all. I know I deserve a better mark than I received.

The honest truth is labour law is not as easy as we think it is. There is so much detail which needs to be memorised and so many principles to be applied and any of this can be a challenge in an exam. The exam was straight forward and there were no trick questions. The marking was strict because the material is straight forward. Despite all this, I am very good at estimating my exam mark just after writing the exam. I have gotten so good that the difference between the actual and estimate is within the 4% range. However labour law proved to be something else. My estimate was a mark of 68 but I got a mere 53. That part I cannot explain.

I don't think any proper marking was done at all. I know I passed this module considering that this was my second attempt on this module and that the exam questions were straightforward and fair , a fail to the tune of 16% is so absurd and came as a great surprise to me.

Feel that results are very unfair and I have failed this module numerous times now, especially because I wrote the paper in Afrikaans. This defintely needs very serious attention!

Passed but very odd to receive 50% on an exam that was totally straightforward - think error in scoring.

The exam scope and the exam, was not hard to understand, a fail is a discouragement after so much effort put into preparation of exams. If we have to pay for a remark, why does it have to be only from above 35% course this leaves us with no recourse, for the unjustified marking process.

I want a remark before registration. it's unfair that I prepared for the exam and shockingly I failed with 20% how I want my examination transcript. I think the Labour lecturer needs to be investigated. busy demotivating students. he/she must retire if not coping up with the job. I am not happy.

It was a difficult exam and it really threw me. I did however expect to get a pass or atleast a supplementary exam and not the horrible fail. I just feel that if so many students fail and continuously fail then something is not rite and the problem should be addressed as to why it seems almost impossible to pass the subject.

I knew some of the answers word for word as written in the textbook. To be honest, I never faced a challenge in labour law exam. Something is fishy!

I've worked so hard and to get a failing result was pure shock. After speaking to the lecturer he advised me to learn the textbook and not do any past papers. I asked for an explanation on a certain aspect and he regurgitated the section word for word from the textbook! This department is flippant with its responsibilities towards its students

Extremely disappointing and traumatising at the same time. This result has left me in complete disarray, to the point where I'm unable to do anything else but seek some form of recourse. This is the first module I have failed in my life, after successfully completing 2 qualifications prior to the current LLB. I'm still in shock and sincerely plead with all stakeholders to look into this matter urgently and provide all affected students with some form of feedback on action to be taken once the results have been reviewed. The fact that so many students failed this exam clearly indicates a fatal flaw in either the marking or capture of these marks. Kindly review all marks as a matter of urgency!

The failure rate for this module should be a clear indication that something is wrong within the department. Having called the lecturer, I was told NOT to do past papers as they do not help and was advised to learn the textbook by heart. In fact the lecturer gave me a regurgitated explanation of strikes word for word from the textbook! Some accountability would be highly appreciated as it is not feasible to keep failing and repeating one module time and again. This department is flippant!

I failed this module THREE times. We pay so much for studying but what do we get in return from UNISA! They don't answer calls, they don't respond to emails, sometimes they take forever to reply even. This is a big rip off. This is a serious problem about LABOUR LAW! I'm taking this matter of mine further up with the Dean and Ombudsman.

This is very disturbing that we have to suffer like this. UNISA is doing nothing to assist students or make it easier on students. We work so hard to get such pathetic results and treatment. We pay so much. Our hard working money or loans go into fees only to get robbed in the end. I am taking this to the media!!!!

I have 19 distinctions out of the 24 subjects that I have written so far. I have never failed an exam in my entire academic life. This is the first failure! Am wondering as to whether I wrote the same question paper that the examiner used for his/her marking script? This is not good for the University!

I am in shock of my results of Labour Law and this happens to me for the second time. UNISA is out of order and i support the petition. I think the review of this should have be done from first semester. I have suffered a lot with UNISA and when i ask for my script, they do not want to give them to me. I stand with the Oct/Nov students who have received a bad marks on the Labour Law exams. I also was affected about the marking strategy of Unisa when it comes to MRL3702 module. Both my attempt on this modules where unsuccessful and upon requesting a remark it came back as the same. While waiting on the feedback on the remark, I had to constantly remind and pressurized the exam department to give me feedback on my remark. To my surprised the remark came as exactly as the exam mark, I had doubt that they even rechecked my script.

I am disappointed at this. I received a mark of 36% which is completely absurd to say the least. What I find even more of a concern is that so many students have been complaining of exactly the same issue and that some (in the past) have accepted these results to be true and fair and merely repeated the module without questioning the results or applying for a remark. I hold several prior qualifications of which a BCom Honours, ACMA and a MBA. I’ve also been a lecturer at one of South Africa’s leading universities for a few years. Therefore I not completely new to the academic environment. That said, I by no means underestimate the LLB degree presented by UNISA, nor the module Labour Law and I have respect and admiration for the institution’s College of Law and its academics as a whole, hence my decision to study through UNISA However, I can honestly say that I have completed a significant number of exams in my life and this is the first time that I’ve completed an exam with a reasonable expectation to receive a fair result and in turn received a mark of this nature.
