Pietermaritzburg - An Ashburton father watched as his wife and children were pulled to another room by armed robbers at their home on Monday night.

In the lounge with his hands bound by cable ties, the robbers assaulted the helpless man as his wife and children, who were bound as well, disappeared into another room.

According to police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese, the robbery happened at about 11 pm on Monday night at a house in Restdene Road, Ashburton.

The family were in the lounge when the father opened the door to let their dog out of the house.

While opening the door, he was confronted by three men, two of whom were armed with guns.

The man tried to slam the door shut but he was overpowered — the robbers had already started to push their way through.

The robbers stormed into the house and held the family at gunpoint, binding their hands with cable ties before hauling the wife and children to the bedroom.

Left alone in the lounge with a gunman, it is believed the father was hit many times with the butt of the handgun as the robber demanded cash.

After he repeatedly said there was no cash in the house, Ngobese said a gunshot was fired but the man was left unscathed.

The trio ransacked the house, stealing the television set, jewellery and cash.

Ngobese said the robbers took all the family’s cellphones and put them into the kitchen sink, which they filled with water.

“It seems as though the robbers intentionally damaged the cellphones so the family would not be able to get help,” he said.

The robbers made off with the stolen items in the family’s Ford Ranger.

Ngobese said yesterday that police are still on the hunt for the suspects.

The family were approached by The Witness yesterday but declined to comment.
